If we can think it, we can do it !

A FORUM FOR INNOVATION - INSPIRED BY THE POETRY OF DESIGN.

1887 - 2000    -   HIPPO MOBILE TRAMWAY

1887 - The hippo mobile tramways was the principal transport for the urban Montreal metropolis .

In the picture, the "St. Denis" Hippo Mobile Tramway, on St. Dennis street on Mont Royal Platow, Montreal 1887.

1887 - News paper                                                              1887 - Plans

1994 - Dr. Simon-Pierre Lacerte who posed already Canadian horses in his school farm in St-Gérard-de-Magellan, had a dream:  to see a tramway in the same look and function like one in 1887... but with the technology of ... today.

CONDITIONS: The project consisted in an identical replica of 1887 tramway, but with a year 2K-technology and conformity with today street laws.

The tramway have to posed 24 places, pneumatic wells and suspension, lights signs, personalized audio system for all passages, etc.

The project is more interesting because it was proposed to full time summer work for 10 guys: two drivers, controllers, ticket's sealers, storage man, and another team to make this happen with an powerful advertising and management machine.

1999 - We begin the research to Rail Museum in Kingston (see pictures above) where we find the authentic module of an rail tramway that firmly conform the documentation research by the style of 1887.

Ergonomic analysis - to accommodate in optimal way 24 people included in the 95th percentile.

We add a system, in the back of the tramway, to accommodate people with a reduced mobility.

This study has an major point to change the intern structure of the tramway according with the dimensions and the limits permitted by street circulation laws and insurances limits policy.

One of the most important detail ( and "secret" ) is that this tramway structure is based on the back seat support ( see assembling details - playing with geometry) to contract vibrations and to keep the vertical structure in just 12 bars ( see sections details ).

The distance from the front wheels id designed to permit the turning at 260 degrees for easy maneuverability.

The top bars are not just decoration - having a metal intern structure to complete the polygon section geometry with the contact missing.

All piece of this tramway is demountable.

The publicity panels are made in 1887 style...

What are you waiting for ?!  Come on and take a ride !
